#11………Next Thursday is Thanksgiving Day in the USA, and it looks like neither Trump’s criminal pardon, nor President Biden’s traditional White House Thanksgiving turkey pardon has spared Steve Bannon.
#11 contd…….Jacob Chansley, the horned helmet guy who took part in the attempted coup d’etat at the US Capitol…..and pleaded guilty to “obstructing an official proceeding”……was sentenced to 41 months in prison. There was no Trump pardon for him!

(I think that both turkeys are actually spared from the dinner table these days.)
Tris……..The situation at the Capitol was chaotic, and news reports about protestors/rioters /insurrectionists bearing “lethal weapons” have been confusing. I think that Nancy Pelosi has described it as an “armed insurrection.” But as the USA Today newspaper story described in March (link below,) there had at that point apparently been only three individuals charged with firearms violations, based on guns and ammunition found outside of the Capitol building. I’ve not since heard of any guns among the crowd actually having been seen or confiscated inside the building. The weapons of choice seemed to be flag poles, ball bats, bear spray, etc.
There has been a lot of controversy about the minimal nature of the crimes that have been charged so far. The law seems to not differentiate with low level property crimes of breaking windows, destroying and defacing furniture, etc, even if the building is the US Capitol, and the goal is to overturn an election and subvert the constitution of the republic. In all likelihood, more serious charges against known terrorists and militia groups that were there will come later. The ongoing January 6 Select Committee investigation in the House……which the Republican leadership refused to join in a formal bipartisan Commission of Inquiry……..will be looking into high-level, long-term planning and funding. Only two Republicans ended up joining the House select committee, most notably Liz Cheney (Dick Cheney’s daughter) who is serving as Vice Chair of the committee, and has now been effectively read out of the Wyoming Republican Party. She had previously lost her position in the House GOP leadership and been censured by the Wyoming GOP for her YES vote on the second Trump impeachment.
As far as I could see, Danny, they were trying to overthrow the duely and democratically elected president. and keep the non elected ex-president as their head of state.
To my mind that is a coup d’état, or at least that’s what they would call it if it happened in Central America, or in Africa (where it does, from time to time).
I hope that at least the ring leaders including those in the presidential party will get their just deserts under the law.
I’ve got a lot of respect for Liz Cheney. Her politics may not be my politics, but she seems t have at least some principles.
Tris……I agree! Apart from her conservative Republican politics, Liz has done a lot to salvage the Cheney family name; but apparently not much to further her political career in the Wyoming GOP.
And I agree that the rioters/insurrectionists were certainly engaged in attempting to carry out a coup d’etat by any reasonable understanding of the term. “Rebellion or Insurrection” is clearly a federal crime:
Section §2383 of Title 18 of the United States Code:
“Rebellion or Insurrection:
Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.”
Of course the judicial matter of proving intent beyond a reasonable doubt in a federal courtroom and according to the federal rules of evidence is the tricky part. Apart from proving the intent of people like Trump and his henchmen who organized and promoted it, there are the nut cases like the horned helmet guy who got worked up by Trump and went down the street to the Capitol to raise hell.
So we’ll see what Biden’s Justice Department actually decides to do with the ringleaders. Establishing a judicial precedent of using the Department of Justice for political retribution against a former presidential administration is a matter of concern.
Steve Bannon is guilty as sin of course, along with Trump and Giuliani and the rest. Bannon has now been indicted for Contempt of Congress, for refusing to respond to a subpoena to appear before the January 6 Select Committee. The MSNBC video has a clip at about 0:45 which shows what Bannon said would happen on January 6.
It’s coming out that major planning for the insurrection was carried out in a “war room,” actually a group of rooms, located down the street from the White House at the Willard Hotel.
The historically minded will know that Julia Ward Howe wrote the lyrics to The Battle Hymn of the Republic in a room at the Willard in 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was down the street at the White House.
