      1. Tris…..Speaking of brioche……I think that’s what we bought at the grocery story the other day because it looked good. Turns out, it was too sweet to be bread and not sweet enough to be cake. Neither fish nor fowl was my thought. (Maybe not a good item to buy in a grocery store anyway. 😉 )

Tris…….Unfinished business:…..My browser link to the previous “Then and Now” thread has gotten hopelessly garbled, and I can’t post replies on it anymore. We were talking about the New York Times article on language and its style manual. Please do Email the link to John as you suggested. Better than my reposting it…..which I can’t do on that thread anymore anyway. 😉

        1. PS Tris…….I just now see your reply on Then and Now that you have sent the link as we discussed. Turns out I can see some replies, but I can’t reply to them. No problem on the other threads though. WordPress is a mystery……LOL.

        2. I’ve sent it…

Brioche comes in all sorts… Of course it is best known for reputedly being what the French Queen proposed as food for starving peasants… Ma’am they have no bread… Well, let them eat cake…

It can be really nice with some chocolate chips in it… or sultanas, or even custard.

I think they used to sell it in Scotland as Butter Biscuits, which were like bread rolls but sweeter… but I may be wrong about that.

          1. Tris……Interesting! It looks good, but to us as I said, the grocery store brioche was too sweet for bread and too bread-like for cake. Chocolate chips or custard might help, but for me, the different forms of disgusting dried grapes are…..well…….disgusting. As I understand it, there are three forms of wrinkled up dried grapes that are foisted on people by the commercial grape interests……..raisins, sultanas, and currants. I assume they all taste as bad as raisins (the only one of the three I’ve tasted,) but at least the sultanas and currants don’t turn black. 😉

IMHO, the popularity of dried fruit in any form surpasses all understanding.

              1. LOL…….Perhaps your blackbird has a discerning palate when it comes to the various forms of wrinkled, dried up grapes. Perhaps I should actually try sultanas. I’ve only tasted the black things, which I’ve heard people identify as “sweet.” Sweet???? Of all the things I could say about the flavor of raisins, SWEET doesn’t even come to mind 😉

                1. Bertie the Blackbird does recommend you try sultanas. He says he’s sure that you will like them, but if you don’t you can always send them on to:
                  Bertie Blackbird,
c/o Munguin Towers Grounds, (the tree at the back)
                  Dundee,
                  Scotland….

Oh and he adds that it’s hardly worth the postage for a small pack…so a large one would be nice. 🙂

                  1. LOL……My best wishes to Bertie. Perhaps I should try sultanas.
Nice to have his address. Not many blackbirds in the States have mailing addresses. 😉

              1. Tatu……I figure that a grape grower had some batches of grapes go bad, and manged to convince people that they’re edible. 😉

There was a famous television ad campaign back in the 1960’s that sold prunes.

  1. Talking, very obliquely, about lavvies; did Alexander Boris, Albo von Jizzmark rip up the script for loo-roll at PMQ’s today?

When Starmer landed a few blows, gone was the bumbling Nigel Bruce-as-Dr Watson schtick and we got a pause free, machine gun delivery from a clearly rattled BoJo.

    1. Apparently he completely lost it.

So Bumbles is all a clever act… It’s a pity he couldn’t have been a little less bumbling when he addressed President Biden’s Climate Change Zoom.

He really was a monumental embarrassment there.
