Sorry about that, people. Kevin was guilty of advocating acts of lèse-majesté, almost, coz he is in line for the throne, isn’t he. I disavow him! His name is anathema to me!

        1. That’s a really posh name for Kevin… Is it Greek?

Anyway, I think enormous tattooed guys in prison probably prefer something a little younger and slimmer than Prince Tubby No Sweat!

          1. This is true, Tris, but beggars can’t be choosers, eh? Or, any port in a storm, and suchlike sentiments.

BTW, I have known a couple of enormous tattooed guys in my time and they were really nice. We don’t do prejudice here in Schloss Freeman (well, apart from Nazi and white supremacist stuff).

What this about posh Greek names, though? That little swine Kevin doesn’t have any posh names and doesn’t deserve any.

However, as an Edward / Ted / Teddy, I can with some justification lay claim to Theodore, which is nothing if not posh, meaning as it does “God’s Gift”.

  1. Jimmy Ferguson is back on twitter -YES.

“Do vegetarian cannibals only eat Swedes?”

“Being educated at Yale has opened many doors for me.”

A good set of toons bar one. I’d written a very pissed off comment and am debating whether to post it as I do value the essential good natured heart of MNR. For the moment all I will say, is that many women feel safer in a room and country run by Alex Salmond than one run by Nicola Sturgeon. Not to mention the two interdicts she took out because that of course that means we can’t mention them.

And yes the above is the unpissed off version!

        1. “Do I dare say “Wheesht for indy”?”

I will when Sturgeon stops undermining a jury verdict and focuses on indy and not smearing her predecessor. Can she not leave the smears to the Unionists, they will be more the happy too! In general I do think we should stop sniping at fellow Yessers, but it needs to work both ways.

          1. The jury’s verdict does nothing to absolve AS of inappropriate behaviour, behaviour he has admitted to.

The crown failed to make its case, that doesn’t automatically mean some witnesses in a he said, she said scenario are liars.

Acquitted or not, Alex Salmond could have, should have, shown a deal more contrition in my opinion.

I’m genuinely unhappy at the willingness of some to overlook his character flaws & to use his acquittal as an excuse to paint him as virtue personified.

Although I do agree it’s best if Nicola Sturgeon keeps her trap shut on this topic, the Unionists don’t need any more ammo; there’s enough as is.

The women & younger men in my orbit are less than impressed with our former FM. That leaves me to conclude (on the shallowest of evidence) that his personal constituency is older males; precisely the group most responsible for, most tolerant of & least concerned about predatory behaviour. It’s not a good look gentlemen.

Sorry if that all appears to a bit lofty on my part, but I do have two daughters. I am probably a bit more sensitive than some on the issue.

I’ll need to see some good figures from credible polling before I’ll shift from SNP + SNP. My list vote is insurance against a less than hoped for constituency outcome. Getting cute with your list vote, for marginal gains, risks greater losses if a constituency or two goes south.

On one charge only which had already been dealt with under civil service procedures years previously when BOTH had been drinking. She was offered an alternative equal status post, declined it and worked with him for several years afterwards. He denied all other charges.

“that doesn’t automatically mean some witnesses in a he said, she said scenario are liars.”

All but two of the charges were WITNESSED, no he said/she said about it. The one above which he said shouldn’t have happened but wasn’t criminal and the one, Woman H, where the other people present at the immediately preceding dinner she claimed she attended stated the woman wasn’t even in the building that evening. One witness said she was only present because woman H asked her to GO IN HER PLACE. Plus the Bute house register showed she hadn’t been in the building 6 weeks around the date of the claimed attack. You can’t just roll into the place, you need to be signed in.

“his acquittal as an excuse to paint him as virtue personified.”

Didn’t suggest he was. None of us are. But if more people knew what the defence case was and what the defence witnesses said the acquittals would make a lot more sense. Only the prosecution case appeared in the MSM.

“his personal constituency is older males”

And yet his party is attracting women including Caroline McAllister whose working life has been supporting women and girls.

“Sorry if that all appears to a bit lofty on my part, but I do have two daughters. I am probably a bit more sensitive than some on the issue”

No I understand your feelings but do you know I’m a woman? Do you know how many of us are raging that the Hate Crime Bill excluded sex as an aggravator. And that Humza Yousaf smirked when he said that women would be covered by the bill if the attacker thought we were a transwoman. There are a lot more instances where women’s rights are being threatened by the SNP.

The Women and the Equalities Convenors have both left the SNP to join a party led by Alex Salmond. That says a lot.

              1. Apologies PP, it was just a stream of consciousness on my part; I didn’t intend to offend anyone. I should have made a general post rather than reply to you, I did wander off a fair bit.

I don’t like the Hate Crimes Bill any more than you do. I also don’t like the high handed attitude, the SNP leadership have shown, towards dissenting opinion within the party. I’m also happy to see the GRA legislation iced for the moment, but I’m not sure I know exactly why; I genuinely don’t know much about the subject & I haven’t shown any interest in it. I do know it has caused self-inflicted and unnecessary damage to the wider movement.

I still think we’d be in a better place if AS had issued a mea culpa. A little contrition would have gone a long way.

Sorry Tris, everyone, if I’ve ruined the thread. I usually drop in to get away from this stuff.

Personally I don’t care how are get over the line, as long as we do. In my case, if I thought my list vote would be best placed with Alba, then personalities will be the least of my concerns.

As things stand and until we have something to chew on re Alba’s poll numbers, I’m still SNP+ SNP. We have 3 Unionist incumbents here in the Lothians & Edinburgh Pentlands is a high Tory target (I was genuinely surprised the SNP took it in 2016) & my list vote is insurance for now. If a sweep, or even gaining Central (Ruth Davidson’s seat) looks likely, I’ll reassess.

It was all very simple in years gone by: SNP + Margo every time.

And it is good that MR is seen as somewhere to escape the vitriol of the current debates in the independence movement.

I’ve tried to avoid controversy for that reason.

It didn’t occur to me that a jokes page would start this argument.

As Andimac pointed out, it’s not very pc to have people shooting off guns in the supermarket… nor I suppose, for some, suggesting that a member of the royal family should be incarcerated in BarL.

I suppose it’s not too nice to propose introducing bleach into the English FM, no matter how much fun it would be.

Nor, as I said before, is it nice to laugh at idiots who thought they were so superior that what applied to “foreigners” didn’t apply to them…

None of that has stopped me publishing.

Some folk may be offended but, hey, you can’t please all of the people…

I think NS and AS should get into a room bury a hatchet, preferably not in each other… and work out a way forward.

Some of us have worked hard for this and I don’t give a stuff for their arguments, no matter what they are about.

Both need to remember that WE pay them.

Sort it out and work to get independence.

              2. I think one of the problems with the AS trial verdict is that there was very little reporting of the evidence for the defence and Craig Murray may end up in prison for his reporting of that.
This is in spite of the fact that others actually gave away far more information about the complainants than he did, including a journalist who claimed on the front page of SoS that AS hoped to deprive the SNP of a majority.

              1. For some (women in my family are particularly vocal on this point so I’m sensitive to this) it’s not about gaming the list. They just can’t bring themselves to vote SNP because of various non Independence issues that dominate SNP policy.

Alba has possibly rescued their SNP constituency vote and given a better option than abstaining on the regional list.

He once was a fan, and now hates Salmond.

Me, I don’t hate any of them. Nor do I particularly like any of them. They are politicians.

Maybe it would be best if the next FM was DRoss, and we could remind ourselves of just how incredibly horrible it is to live under a hard right wing English government.

It would only be for 5 years and then independence would be a certainly.

For the rest, I suspect the involvement of the UK Department of Dirty Tricks to run as effective a campaign as possible to sow hatred and division within our ranks. Alas, if my premise is true, they have most certainly succeeded.

I try very hard not to hate anyone, but lying, manipulative, power-mad, corrupt and soul-dead authoritarian politicians do make my shit list. Which doesn’t include any non-Unionist politician here in Scotland.

    1. Post it by all means, PP. I’d be interested to read it. The point of cartoons, particularly politically-related ones is to provoke a reaction. For some that will be amusing, for others infuriating: some will laugh, others growl. There will be dyed-in-the-wool Royalists who don’t like fun being poked at Prince Andrew and I daresay Tory supporters won’t be cock-a-hoop with the one of Bojo and Dross. Surely No1 portraying a gunman killing folks in a supermarket could be considered in appalling taste, making fun out of an atrocity? That’s the trouble with freedom of speech, a lot of folks think it’s only their speech that should be free.

      2. I absolutely agree with you on free speech and the right to disagree and also the right to provoke. However I also believe in the jury system and that when someone is acquitted on all counts by a majority female jury on hearing female defence witness testimony stating the events didn’t happen in a trial led by a female judge, maybe people should stop insinuating they are guilty.

Or a danger to women. The SNP’s former Equalities and the Women’s Convener have both joined Alba. Alba have already pledged to protect women’s sex based rights and are holding a women’s conference this week. Today two more SNP councillors, both female, have joined Alba. So the toon is inaccurate, the of the 12 elected switchers from the SNP I know of, 6 are female.

I’m a member of no party, never have been. I don’t like personality politics, though I do accept that happens. I do mind being told to wheest for an indy that never comes whilst my vote for indy is abused to bring forward legislation I would never have voted for. I like having an alternative, even if it is a choice between a man with far too guid conceit of himself versus a narcissistic liar with memory problems.

        1. Thanks, PP, for elucidating your position. Like you, I’m not a member of any party and dislike personality politics. It was not my intention to infer that Alex Salmond was guilty of criminal sexual assault but his reported behaviour at times was far from laudable and I was, in my cartoon, suggesting that he might frighten the lassies off. You may have noticed that I portrayed him as a “wee boy”. As to the ‘toon being inaccurate, I fail to see the point of your comments about the number of women who have joined Alba, I had no intention to suggest that Alba would be all male. Frankly, I’m pissed off myself at the response to what was meant as a piece of fun. Your response, at least , is considered and measured, unlike the one that precedes it from someone I won’t dignify with a reply. I’m not sure whether I’d be better off chucking the cartoons or MNR. I’ll just sign off with ALBA = A Load of Blithering Arseholes. Ciao!

        2. I liked andimac’s cartoon. I used to like Mr Salmond. I gave to his crowdfund and joined the SNP. Now however, regardless of the court verdict, what I’ve heard about him and some reporting that many knew of his behaviour towards women for years, has put me right off him.
I had a boss when I worked in Edinburgh in the late 70s, he was a bit predatory and it is really, really unpleasant, and when he is just your boss in a small company there is nothing much you can do, it must be so much worse when he was in charge of a country!
I think Nicola Sturgeon is great and has done wonders for Scotland and in representing Scotland throughout the world.

Is it true though? I don’t know because I’ve not heard any evidence confirming this. I know that the police questioned over 400 women about him and none of them had any concerns about his behaviour other than the 9 connected directly to Nicola Sturgeon.

If people knew about his “behaviour” why was nothing done about it? He wasn’t in charge of the country, or even the SNP, the entire time. My personal feeling is that he can be demanding and a bully, but I’m unconvinced by unsupported claims of criminal sexual behaviour. If this was known why did Westminster not use it in 2014 instead of the Vow? They wouldn’t have to have promised us anything and it would have destroyed the independence movement at the worst possible time.

I’m so sorry about your experience, it would have been awful. Most women unfortunately have some horror story to tell.

On two of these occasions the people concerned were women. One, when I was not long out of university, was a bloke.

It is an intolerable situation. In all three cases they were nice enough people but they felt inclined to believe that being the boss gave them the right to do what they wanted.

So I know what it is like.

    1. I dare say, John, that some would say it was cruel of me to post that.

Maybe it was. These people’s lives have been ruined by Brexit, for which most of them voted becasue they didn’t like immigrants going into England. But thought it was perfectly reasonable for ex-pats like them to live in Spain, speaki8g English and flying union jacks all over their English pubs.

I suppose it’s not really funny at all that they were too stupid to see that British exceptionalism is something only (some) Brits see… and every one else laughs like a drain at.

And worst of all, they could have done what people have done in the UK and applied to remain.

Some did and were refused (just as some here have been) and some couldn’t be bothered, presumably thinking that they were too important to have to do that.

So welcome back to wind and rain and sleet and snow. …

      1. I couldn’t understand how they got deported because Spain has had good reports about helping UK citz caught up in the Brexit mess. How come they didn’t just register? Well, it turns out that they didn’t register because they didn’t want to register for tax. If they had registered they would have found themselves liable for back-dated tax and I would guess they either didn’t want to do that or couldn’t afford it.

The story did annoy me because it was another opportunity for the media to present the loss of freedoms as only the freedom to retire to the Costa del Sol and to reframe it as EU country once again oppresses UK.

To be honest, I don’t really feel sorry for them. Not paying tax ought to have consequences.

        1. I’m sure that there would be many different reasons …

They had to register, but if they had (as some had) been working on the side in Spain perhaps filling in the form was too difficult.

          So they didn;t.

As in the UK, people who had had any trouble with the authorities would probably be refused a permit. I’m sure that some of them would have been likely to have small issues (drunkenness, fighting, blah blah).

I think there were people who just refused to fill in the forms… or put it off and put it off. Some maybe really believed the British exceptionalism stuff. You know, Spaniards in the UK have to register, but we are British…!!!!

maybe some filled in the form wrong…

Likewise, I can’t say I feel much sympathy, especially for the ones who voted for Brexit.

Welcome to the great british weather, and Boris Johnson, mates!

I had anticipated taking a holiday. Indeed I said as much to John in an Email the other day.

In any case, this site is not in the “needed” category any more.

Maybe years ago, it played its part, but it’s become just a place to chat and chew the cud over the last few years.

I doubt it will be missed for a couple of weeks.

I think we’ll all appreciate this space all the more when you return. The campaign will be in full flow by then, it’ll be great to drop by for a little grounding.

It is bloody well is “needed” nay essential.

“I had anticipated taking a holiday.”

Ah in that case, have a lovely break. And come back refreshed, on a Soppy Sunday. Oh no, no Easter bunnies now… Guess that’s what google is for!

            1. My thoughts exactly, PP. I can live without Easter bunnies, but without Tris’s soppy orangutans, I shall pine away.

Oh, and we have some independence stuff going on too – not sure anyone else has noticed – and we need Tris to keep our spirits up.

Enjoy your break, Tris – but yes, but MNR – i.e., you – is a necessity. You are a necessity. Needed. Whatever.

          2. Please don’t underestimate the value of M.N.R tris. I reckon along with T.U.S, you two are the best independence supporting websites there are, at least in my opinion. Enjoy your break, but hurry back. We need you.

            1. Thank you, Alex.

I meant that it used to be a bit more hard hitting… Now it’s just a place from old friends to meet and chew the cud.

But it was never learned or authoritative like Scot Goes Pop or Wee Ginger Dug…

              I’ll be back soon.

          3. enjoy your well earned break Tris. Apologies if it was my post above that upset you. You will most definitely be missed. Come back soon. Munguins and WGD are the only two sites I read everyday

  3. It’s good to see the citizens of Munguins’ republic checking their guns in at the door and having a pint at the bar.
Eyes on the prize folks. First vote SNP, second vote Alba or Green.
If you really want indy that is…

  4. I don’t do identity politics either. If I want a hero I watch a movie or read a book, I certainly don’t idolise politicians because putting your faith in one is a very risky business. To get to the top of your game as a politician you will be at times a bully, you’ll be demanding and you’ll be required to have many other undesirable tools in the box. You can throw Borderline Personality Disorder in for some. As well as all that if your any good and going to make it you’ll have a winning smile and personality to present to Josephine Public that she/he can’t or won’t want to see past. They are, in short, humans. Most people know this of course, especially the people who work for them. It’s not some earth shattering revelation. One of the serious problems we face at the moment is that people have become too invested in their allegiances. Yes we all want Indy but we want to be right as well and maybe it’s time to accept that we can’t have both.

Every body that’s YES and has been paying attention has had their share of disappointment/anger/fear/other to deal with this past while. What’s happened has happened and is not going away. If independence is going to happen then it may no longer be achieved by following the one leader.

As for Munguin having a well deserved holiday from this hobby/calling/full time job, I hope you enjoy the break. If memory serves, I think you managed about a week the last time. All the best.

    1. Yes. Agreed.

Successful politicians are probably never nice people.

Ah, yes Munguin’s last vacation was in 2016. We went off to Hungary and Austria.

      That was fun.

Staycation this time though… some walking on the hills…

Let’s see if we can manage more than a week.

      🙂

      1. Tris,

You certainly deserve a break! Frankly the effort that you put into this blog astonishes me. Please come back before the election though!

        1. We4ll, I COULD. Whether this is a sensible move or not, I suspect, is anotehr matter.

The snoozing in the grounds will only last for a short while.

The day of reckoning could be most disagreeable.

And it is thought abroad, our sick elites
      Are but leeching sophists: I know that it be true;
For I know men of Eton in that kind,
      Who never parted puberty. They hold you low;
The better shall their purpose work on you.

Boris’s a shag-worn man: let me see now:
To get his place and to plume up my will
      In double knavery–How, how? Let’s see –
After some time, to abuse politicos’ ears
That he is too familiar with their lives.
      He hath a hundred thousand dead disposed;
      Would they reflect it?
Graves that make his reign false?

The Boor is of a ditch-sucked broken nature,
      That thinks men jarring inconveniences,
And will as tenderly be led by the nose
      As asses are.
      I have’t. Iagove’s scheme! Hell and night
Must bring this monstrous birth to the world’s light.”

I’ll maybe pop back for the weekend and then disappear again for another week.

Marcia sent me some really nice AOY pics.
