If Angela Rayner comes to live amongst us in our humble abodes we shall understand that the 2012-2014 Labour/Tory coalition was but a test and that the Tory austerity block grant it gave us is just another test and we shall return to the fold of the Red Tories. pic.twitter.com/zZBAD1GrYh

If there were a cure for stupid, Ms. Rayner would be well advised to come and live in Scotland, because she’d get the medicine free on prescription and have an opportunity to cure her willful pig-ignorance about this place at the same time. But as they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. Or think.

How un-self-aware she and the rest of the candidates for Labour leadership positions are. Does Ms Rayner not realise how patronising her remark sounds? She was serious in her statement. Had been delivered tongue-in-cheek, it would still have been condescending, but it would have shown a bit of humour, albeit pretty feeble.

Remember when people used to think it was the Tories who were the patronising snoots and Labour were the honest friends if the worker? The Liberals of course were lovely people who wore concerned smiles and wholesome clothing.
I think those days end when Ealing Studios closed.

I don’t think there was any tongue-in-cheek intended there, Alasdair.
I think her condescending attitude is typical of metropolitania.
Ewww, who’d actually go and live in Scotland?

No, it was definitely not tongue-in-cheek. I have to admit that I was disappointed when I heard her make the remark, because, given her personal history and her handling of her shadow cabinet brief, I had formed the impression that she was someone with her feet on the ground and who knew what the life experience is like for many millions of people. (The same goes for Ms Emily Thornberry, although she withdrew, pretty handsomely, her ‘I hate the SNP’ remark.) How would Ms Rayner have reacted had an aspiring Tory MP for her constituency announced the he/she was prepared to live in the constituency to win the vote?
She and Ms Nandy and Ms Phillips simply have not made any attempt to become aware of their English/British nationalism. They accuse those of us who seek independence for Scotland or Wales as ‘nationalists’ who engage in ‘identity politics’. I would have thought that the stalwart work, Ms Phillips, for example, has done for women who have been abused and for women’s rights as ‘identity politics’, too.
It is the lack of introspective self-awareness that makes m despair of so many in the Labour Party.

PS. Does anyone know who Angela Rayner is?

No idea at all. But I did look her up.

I am not sure what she was doing in Scotland, welcome though she is to visit our beautiful country. She doesn’t seem to be running for the leadership.

she’s favourite in the running for the deputy. The deputy hustings were on the same day as the leader one.

“So, to me, we’ve got to put every resource we’ve got into helping you, Richard, and the rest of the team here to win. I would LIVE in Scotland, if I have to, for that period…”
You’re welcome. 🙂
