  1. С Новым годом всем и каждому!

Andimac, thanks for your poetical contribution just now. I think I can hear people thinking “and so say all of us”.

I have much enjoyed the time I’ve spent reading Tris’s blog and other Munguinites’ contributions below the line, and shooting my mouth off at GREAT length in return.

    Thank you.

  2. Regards to all.
The year to come will be filled with more education from the blog.
Love the picture of my new SNP representative for East Renfrewshire.
Thanks to all for making my mornings with the uplifting comments.

      1. Naw that’s East Dunbartonshire that Swinson didnae live in.

The photo he means is Kirsten Oswald who beat Paul Masterton the Tory – who for all his faults did live not only in the country but indeed in the constituency itself.

  4. Could have sworn I’d read that poem somewhere else 🙂

As the Bells edge ever nearer, farewell 2019 – you’ll not be missed. Hello 2020 full of promise and hope. A promise of better days ahead and a hope for an independent Scotland becoming ever closer as it becomes ever more imperative.

Dear EU – leave a light on for us to find our way back. Missing you already.

Stop the world, Scotland wants to get on.

  5. Happy New Year to Tris and Munguin and all Munguinites everywhere.

Tune and lyrics are nice. The video not so much. Hard to find a rendition with more or less original lyrics.

    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
    For auld lang syne,
    We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
    And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes
    And pu’d the gowans fine;
    But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit
    Sin auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl’d i’ the burn,
    Frae mornin’ sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
    Sin auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
    And gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right guid willy waught,
    For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
    For auld lang syne,
    We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne.

  6. “Arabest” to one and all for 2020 and a new decade, from one of the old “decayed”.
The humour and erudition on this site has been a source of endless pleasure. How miserable it must be to be a yoon in the universe of yoon miserabilism.

    1. Same to you, Cairnallochy. We are indeed blessed with so many witty and wise contributors, including your good self!

But I’m sure there must be fun to be had on the Daily Mail/Express website. Imagine how much tutting and shaking head these sites provoke!

  7. Sair heids the morn? Nae here, This auld yin’s halo is glowing with self-righteousness. -6C last night and a strong chance of snow was too intimidating for first-fittin’ or joining the midnight festivities in the village square. Hence the rare (maybe even unique) experience of greeting Ne’erday all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Perfect excuse for inflicting a sermon on those lacking such restraint and discipline. (See what I mean abut the self-righteousness?)

Like Cairnallochy, decayed admittedly, but not decade – just millennium deja vu all over again. Back in 1999, many of us fought a rearguard action (largely in vain) trying to make people understand that the third millennium would not begin at midnight on December 31. There was no year zero, therefore 2000 years would first have to be completed before the new millennium could begin – on January 1, 2001. (As it did, despite all the premature brouhaha.)

By the same logic, we need to wait another year for the eve of a new decade. Even normally erudite Munguinites have fallen for this trap, judging by the number of references made. A disappointing departure from the evidence-based logic that usually prevails. In the best millennarian tradition, I can only take it as a portent that this time the end really is nigh.

Anyway, may you all have a great 2020 – and keep us enlightened and entertained as always. Let’s hope there is significance in the number and that our vision of an independent Scotland achieves matching 20/20 acuity.

    1. Jings. There’s nothing like a smart ass to start the year. 🙂

Just because uniquely, this yeah, you’re not on the Bulgarian equivalent of Alka Seltzer.

The irritating thing, of course, is that you are right.

The decades start on 1, 11, 21. and end on 10, 20, 30…etc. And becasue your head isn’t hurting you can see that clearly.

I hope you felt sufficiently well to bring the RS breakfast in bed! 🙂

    1. I don’t think the referendum will take place this year.

But I really hope that there will be some progress; that someone somewhere will be able to convince Dominic Cummings that the situation cannot continue like this. The will of the “British” people from Scotland must be listened to.

But here’s hoping for the health and strength for us all to participate in some way in that.

      All the best, Alex!

    1. Can I just say that I find you all an incredible resource that keeps me sane? Which isn’t easy?

This is probably the best outward looking Scottish nationalist web site on the planet.

I hope that our good host is wrong when he says:

“I don’t think the referendum will take place this year.”

But that is a friendly disagreement.

Perhaps see you on the Glasgow March?

It ain’t over ’till its over.

        1. I’m not convinced by that prediction of no indyref2 until next year, though I can see the rationale for it. However… Nicola Sturgeon doesn’t get distracted, and second, although Brexit is technically slated to happen on 31 January, but it went down just before Christmas so people have had other things on their mind, so we’ve seen only the first signs of the Brexit bounce in support for independence. When Brexit gets debated again in Parliament (if I have the procedure right) in a few days’ time, and it becomes obvious that what Parliament passed was not the deal which he got with the EU before the General Election and has some nasty stuff in it, people may start to sit up and pay more attention – apart from anything else, there were worker protections in the pre-election version that were put in to try to bring some Labour MPs on board but have been taken out again.

One possibility that has been mooted is that the 2021 Scottish elections may be brought forward to this year, because originally they were postponed to 2021 because a UK General Election was expected to take place this year pursuant to the the five-year parliaments Act. How that might or could interact with an independence referendum is not clear – Cassandra says the auguries are unreadable, but it’s probably just a hangover. The only purpose that would serve, I think, would be to try to get an actual majority of SNP MSPs at Holyrood, which would knock down yet another of the silly, silly little tissue-thin “preconditions” that keep coming out of Yoonworld for deigning to accept that we do in fact have a mandate to even talk about independence.

The deadline which Boris has imposed for the transitional period for his oven-ready Brexit to end is December – again, this is new from before the General Election. It is not, I think, going to happen; it’s not achievable, so it’s tantamount to a “no deal” scenario, from which only Boris and his nasty little pals – hedge fund managers, vulture capitalists, Gradgrind entrepreneurs, xenophobes, racists and authoritarians – stand to benefit. The EU have come out with a statement in diplo-speak which I translate as “You must be effing joking”. So: will we really have to wait until the excrement hits the ventilation system full force as 2021 rolls round? I have a feeling that the polls will be showing a strong enough majority in favour of independence before the end of this year comes, and I hope and pray that the Scottish Government will go for it. In a spirit of full disclosure, I would really, really like to be alive to see it.

I feel a spot of Shakespeare coming on: “There is a tide in the affairs of men which, when taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries…”

          1. Yes. I see that the actual Brexit Bill isn’t what was negotiated with Brussels. I imagine that Cummings doesn’t think foreigner will be bright enough to see that. The workers’ rights were only there to satisfy those on the left of his party and some Labour people, as you say. He now has no left and he needs Labour voters as much as I need a week in the Clyde Tunnel with Jackie Baillie.

I suppose it is silly to ask if the London lot can simply change the length of the Scottish parliament.

They can do whatever they want. However wrong that might be. When we vot4ed we knew we were voting for a 5 year parliament. It’s not our fault the last two English PMs couldn’t sustain themselves in power.

I think it has always been Cummings’ plan that there should be a NO DEAL Brexit. That way he can get Boris to take whatever Trump wants.

So I think he will make no effort to get any kind of dea, and will blame the intransigence of Brussels and all these Foreigners for the failure… wall the time plotting just that.

Well, I’d like a referendum as soon as is practically and legally possible The EU keeps making encouraging noises. A senior German minister is the latest to say that a fast route into the EU will be available. I doubt he would have said that without the blessing for the German government.

I think that we need to campaigning all this year, and take all the crap that Cummings and his donkey throw at us.
