RANDOM THOUGHTS

Sturgeon and HM the Queen

Oh, how the Express made me laugh today.

The headline read:

Shock as Nicola Sturgeon refuses to curtsy to the Queen as she visits Holyroodhouse

Actually, there is no evidence that she REFUSED to do so. She apparently simply bowed her head a little, which broke no protocol. So it was all a big fuss about nothing.

The article opened:

SCOTLAND’S First Minister Nicola Sturgeon showed no sign of a curtsy when she met the Queen yesterday. Instead, Miss Sturgeon shook hands as the monarch visited the Palace of Holyroodhouse – the royal residence in Edinburgh.

The Queen and Nicola Sturgeon

The Queen, 93, wore a floral dress for the meeting and appeared in pink at a garden party.

It appears that the Express just wanted to get some of its little old lady readers tutting and shaking their heads in horror. They will have been relieved that, without any further ado, they could read what the queen was wearing, both when she met Nicola and when she later appeared at a garden party.

Well, it’s important stuff, that!

So in case there are any little old ladies reading this and who give a damn, here is the pink outfit, because you can never have too many pics of Liz, right?!

The Queen

If you are gagging for further information, you should probably read the Express article, but I can save you the bother by telling you that Anne wore something green, Eddy looked a complete muppet in a top hat… and Andy Airmiles looked, well, fat.

Anyway, the point is Nicola didn’t make an almighty fool of herself like her English counterpart with her knees almost on the floor and her chest almost bared!.

I’ve always thought that Ann Widdecombe was as mad as a box of frogs. I mean the only sensible thing she ever said was that Michael Howard had something of the night about him.

As a Home Office minister, she often said or did slightly bizarre stuff and then when she retired from politics and started being a “tv personality” she was even more outrageous, if less entertaining.

Image result for ann widdecombe strictly

However, in her latest incarnation, Widde is at her weirdest.

She seems to see Brits in the same light as slaves rising against a cruel master. ‘There is, she told the parliament, a long history of “oppressed people turning on their oppressors”.’

“Nous allons, wir gehen, we’re off”!

Well, Old Annie can add polyglot to her list of qualifications!

I suspect that in these initial days of the parliament, people will simply laugh at the immaturity of the Brexit party with their refusal to face the front when “Ode to Joy” was playing and their idiotic speeches about being slaves and threatening to turn on Britain’s oppressors.

But I have a feeling that it won’t be long before the Europeans tire of this nonsense, which the BP is doing, presumably in order to stir up even more xenophobia at home, in time for what is becoming an ever more likely general election in the late autumn!

The answer to them may very well be:

Pour l’amour de Dieu, allez! Um Gottes willen, gehen! For God’s sake, go!

Oh, welcome to Scotland, Theresa.

  2. As so often of a Thursday around teatime, I feel moved to quote Oliver Cromwell.

Dissolution of the Long Parliament by Oliver Cromwell given to the House of Commons, 20 April 1653

“It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice.

Ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government.

Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess?

Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defiled this sacred place, and turned the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices?

Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation. You were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressed, are yourselves become the greatest grievance.

Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by God’s help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do.

I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place.

Go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!”

Sadly go to the supermarket on a Sat or Sunday morning and see lots of older folk with the Express and the Mail, papers that would have made the Nazis proud. The whole Windsor thing just gets on my nerves, it is such a waste of money and designed to keep us down. Why the politicians even pander to them is beyond me, the only thing I can think of is they have far more power than us poor folk have been led to believe. The sooner we are out of this nightmare the better. Not seen anything from Mayhems visit to the dirty North today, was it that secret that no one was allowed in.

I am unimpressed by what is an all out attack on Mhari Black by someone who I thought was worth supporting. Quite what he thinks he gains by that is beyond me.

Just to be clear, I admire Mhari Black, and I used to admire Campbell. The man has his rather obvious limitations.

Clearly Campbell does not do complexity.

Having a forum to attack an ally in the desire for Scottish independence over trivia is not the example of a ‘well rounded or balanced man’.

    Indeed, he protests too much.

Absolutely. I worry more about turning Earth into Venus, which appears to be a political view in the USA. I care more about mutually assured destruction, than I do about independence. I care about inequality globally than I do about us as a group.

“It’s all very new, well to me anyway, and I still haven’t worked out the rights and wrongs of it.”

        1. The problem for me is the hypocrisy of the SNP leadership & many in the indy movement

They know the trans stuff will lose them many more votes than it gains them and in a normal democracy I’d applaud them for their stand.

However this isn’t a normal democracy, its the UK and the SNP has ONE OVERRIDING FUNCTION – deliver independence ASAP.

In terms of what he’s saying about the SNP being “too comfortable” with their sinecures – I agree 100%. I’ve said as much here on several occasions. People like Wishart “went native” years ago at Westminster (he’s been there the best part of 20 YEARS!) & I no longer believe Nicola Sturgeon will call ANY form of plebiscite on independence.

I really hope I’m wrong but I think the SNP are a busted flush in terms of indyref2 since Sturgeon took over from Salmond. I don’t believe they’ll get anywhere close to a majority in 2021 and that’ll be game over for them as they’ll have failed us all. They’ll go exactly the same way as SLAB.

I think Nicola is an excellent FM but I don’t think she has been a good leader of the independence movement. TBF it’s a lot on one person’s plate. Time for the SNP to stop fighting each other and prioritise self determination.

If a bunch of SNP careerist’s arses getting too comfy means I die in a Scotland in the f’ing union, I will come back and haunt the bloody lot of them. And with Brexit and the Tories/BXP I’m not sure that death would be too far in the future either.

      2. If you feel like educating yourself, here’s a good primer on the science (published by Harvard): http://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2016/gender-lines-science-transgender-identity/ (don’t bother with the comments, they’re worse than youtube)

        Some interesting facts it mentions:

~0.3% of the population of Europe and America is trans. The only comparable stat I could find is the number of people in England&Wales who don’t speak any English.

~1.7% of the population is born with “indistinct genitalia at birth”. So that’s a min count on the intersex rate (some intersex people are “invisible”). That makes intersex people at least FIVE TIMES more common than trans people.

Trans people’s brain structures are aligned to the gender they identify as. This is a big one, as it gives a physical reason for why people are trans.

        Liked by 2 people

        1. The sooner people realize that people’s identities in terms of sex and sexuality are pretty much hard wired and may or may not coincide with outward appearance, the happier we shall all be, and that means too that we will lose fewer gay / trans / intersex – all the initials – young people to suicide. Growing up non-straight and non-cis-sexual (etc.) is no bed of roses, even in these relatively enlightened times and in this relatively enlightened place.

As an out gay man myself – I used to think I was such a deviant, but now I know I’m plain vanilla – I expect I have more personal knowledge about and understanding of trans people – and others – than most people do who’ve not strayed from the strait and narrow. Not only that, people are more open to discussing such things with me, because of who I am.

I’ll follow on from that to say that I betcha Mhairi Black knows a lot more about the subject – and the people – than Stu Campbell does. A lot more.

One of the bravest and kindest people I have ever known was a trans man. What a pity Stu Campbell never had the honour to meet him. Who knows, it might have changed even Stu Campbell’s mind.

          1. Honestly, I think Stu is suffering from the fact that he lives in Bath.

So he (? – I bet he’s never had his chromosomes checked) is surrounded (by choice – he could totally afford to move to Scotland if he wanted to) by people with the social mores and attitudes of the south of England.

And then he has the gall to complain about media that’s owned outside of Scotland.

He’s a transphobic misogynist who refuses to ever admit that he’s been wrong. Hrrrm, where have we heard that before?

Everyone I’ve interacted with in person in Scotland (mostly Edinburgh and Fife) has been respectful (even in the rough bits of Fife!). I have never had to correct someone about my gender or pronouns more than once (in person ).

Fortunately, won’t have to see any more of that, from May that is.
On the topic mentioned above,I do think some people in the independence movement are taking their eye off the ball and getting distracted by other things.
Probably frustration at the apparent lack of progress on indy ref2 but that is down to Westminster’s vascillation on Brexit convincing some Scots that there may still be mileage left in the old Union.

  11. SNP will call an independence referendum when the time is right , it’s certainly not right now.
We in Scotland have not been taken out of the EU.
The mandate for a Scottish independence is basically if Scotland is taken out f the EU against its will.
Once a date for Brexit is signed by Westminster and the EU the SNP will announce when the Scottish independence referendum will take place.

It baffles me why so many people keep saying we are missing the boat , we are not, we are biding our time ready to strike when the time is right and that is good because this time we will win if we do it properly.

Wingsoverscotland getting involved with Kezia Dugdale in court and then raising money to appeal the courts decision and now persuading people who have been members of the SNP to end their membership because the SNP along with other party’s in the Scottish government voted overwhelmingly to carry out a worldwide consultation and consider reviewing the transgender Act is in my opinion a bit strange given that wingsoverscotland claims to be a Scottish independence website .
The Kezia Dugdale court case and the review of the transgender Act are NOT things that will have to be determined in order to get Scottish independence .
These two things appear to be personal interests of Stuart Campbell and as is his right he is using the wingsoverscotland website to garner support for those battles.
I think it’s doing more harm than good to do so.
People are saying that the transgender Act review will turn people off supporting SNP and Scottish independence even though it’s an all party labour Lib Dem Tory and greens Scottish government review ,even Stuart Campbell is saying that .
