HONOURS

ahonours-pip
Sir Prince Philip gets a K, because the Queen didn’t like the fact that Charlie had more honours than her husband… Sheeeeeesh! What would you do with a country like this?

I don’t want to snuff out anyone’s candle, particularly those who have just received an honour from the queen, or fans of said recipients, but I couldn’t let yet another list of “the great and the good” or whatever, go by without sharing the fact that I am yet again sickened by what I consider to be “this nonsense”.

The first thing I noticed was that despite the new Brit prime minister railing against the system that had been so sorely abused by her predecessor, and promising that it would never happen again, there are, none the less, several political honours, including rewards for crass incompetence, or for simply being in Mrs May’s Home Office.

There are knighthoods for Conservative MP Julian Brazier, Labour MP David Crausby and former minister and ex-Liberal Democrat MP Steve Webb. Presumably for turning up and doing their very well paid jobs. I’d only heard of Sir Webb before, so heaven knows who the other two are.

A number of party donors are recognised, including Dominic Johnson, associate treasurer of the Conservative Party and now CBE, who gave the Cameron family somewhere to stay when they left Downing Street in July. Aww, that’s nice. You can now get a CBE for letting a multi-millionaire with several homes, live in your house. Sweet, but it does rather devalue it, doesn’t it?

David Ord,  who has given nearly £1m to the Conservative party received a knighthood too. It shows you what a million quid can do for your status. David boy, you probably should have given a little bit more for the seat in the House of Peers!

There is nothing wrong with giving people some sort of recognition for work they have carried out on behalf of the state. Most countries do. But like everything else in this country, the whole thing is rigidly class-bound and corrupt.

For example, I was listening on the radio to a list of people who had been knighted or ‘damed’, or made companions of honour for being “stars” of sport or stage. Ray Davies, of the Kinks, now Sir Ray, for example, or Sir Ken, the tax dodger, Dodd. Well, that’s very nice for them.

People like Sir Ray have done a job they loved using talents that they were born with. And they have made a very good living at it. Like Sir Paul and Sir Mick and Sir Tom and Dame Shirley or Dame Julie, they aren’t short of a bob or two. And the laugh is most of them don’t live in the UK anyway, so they don’t spend a lot of that money back here.

The newscaster went on to say that a lot of the honours had been for people who helped in their communities. Well, that’s good, I thought.  Then he cited an example. It was a guy who was now in his 80s and had worked for 55 years with the Samaritans. 55 years of service, and no jet-setting lifestyle out of it, like  Sir Mick and Sir Tom. And what did this man get? An MBE, the lowest honour going. Why did he not get a knighthood?

Of course, I’ll never be offered an honour, but I can promise that if I were, I would do what Lynn Faulds Woods did and turn it down. I don’t want anything from the British Empire (Where is it anyway? Guernsey?), and even if I once had, the kind of company that you’d have to keep would make me want to hand it back.

  1. I’m with you here Tris regarding this Honours shenanigans.

Don’t get me wrong, for those now bestowed a whatnot I’m happy for them but really the whole honours system has been overtly corrupt for decades.

Just like you I was quite impressed with Lynn Faulds-Woods. That shows there are people out there who still hold some values higher than cow towing to her nibs and co.

I am astounded that people can serve the public for decades and then be ‘offered’ a gong just so long as they accept the lowest of the low gongs available and never expect anything higher. This attitude by the ‘high and mighty’ just confirms that the honours system is corrupt and definitively a Two/Three class system.

I hope after independence we can have our own honours system that far better respects those of noteworthy service to the public. Make THEM knights and Dames! Let’s have a separate lower order class of gongs for sportsmen/women and ‘celebrities’ and yet another lower order one for politicians that desire such nonsense. Above everything else NO ONE should ever receive anything just because they donated loads of money to the Tories or whoever or let an EX-P.M. stay in one of their grandiose houses!

    1. I think the very first thing about honours is that they should NEVER change your name.. No Sir, Lade, Dame, Lord, Prince, Duchess nonsense. That belongs 200 years ago.

Secondly there would be no medals for people doing their jobs, except perhaps people who have risked their lives to do something… firemen/women, police, doctors, paramedics for example, who went well beyond the course of duty.

Certainly no political honours. They already get paid too much. When they retire they should be forced to live in the world they created, not in some elevated lordly place.

Sports stars and pop singers or actors bring a lot of pleasure, but seriously the ones that are considered for these honours are the ones that have been successful and got paid vast sums of money. Good luck to them. Why they need an honour on top of it is beyond my comprehension.

And as you say ABSOLUTELY no donors to political parties. That’s buying titles. Simple.

Yep I agree maybe two or three levels, but for all classes of people. Like the French, no titles before the name, and I don’t think they even use letters after their names.

  2. Crikey. When I saw the Ray Davies pic I thought it was Soppy Sunday and I’d missed the bells. Has he been rescued?

Honours? Only and alone we fight for liberty, which no good man surrenders but with his life.

    1. Aye… I’ll no be asking what you’ve been doing all day if you thought it was the bells.

I’m not entirely sure you get to call him Ray any more. Actually I was bemused by his elevation to the junior aristocracy becasue i kinda thought that after the 60s he’d just disappeared, unlike Sirs Mick and Paul and Cliff and Tom…

Ho hum. I suppose Theresa is old.

      Nice quote. 🙂

  3. I’d have been proud to have written this article, well said! Absolute disgrace that people with years of public service over and above the day job get the lowest honour (Michael Winner called the MBE “the toilet cleaners award”) and folk well paid for what they do get peerages and knighthoods. Also just goes to show cash for honours wasn’t just a Blairite thing.

Well done Lynn Faulds-Wood and also the Hillsborough campaigner who told them to stuff it. As have Benjamin Zepheniah and Alan Bennett before them. I knew if Andy Murray was offered he’d accept but then again so did Sean Connery.

One of the only things Thatcher did that I approved of was take a life peerage rather than the hereditary one she could have had, though Denis got a hereditary baronet. But at least that doesn’t get Mark into the House of Unelecteds.

Anyway happy New Year when it comes. See you Soppy Sunday where no animal in any way, shape or form resembles Ray Davies!

    1. Thank you for the compliment, PP. The article was heartfelt, I admit. I just can;t understand that we allow that at the very top of the social tree we let people have Dukedoms for getting married and Knighthoods because their sons have more honours than they have.

      Seriously…. WHAT?????

Whilst at the bottom they get, as you and Mr Winner called it, the cleaners’ award for YEARS of dedicated service to charity. It really is an absolute scandal

Not that any of these “ordinary” people, many of whom are “extraordinary” do it for the honour.

It’s up to people if they want to accept British Empire stuff. personally I’d run a mile for fear of being associated with the lowlife that have had them in the past, but, if Murray or Connery think it’s important in their lives, fine.

Makes me think of them a little less fondly, that’s all.

I promise that SIR Ray will not feature in Soppy Sunday. Do try to remember to give him his place, PP…
